Rookwood, Beaconsfield

Rookwood is a replacement dwelling in an established residential road in the heart of Beaconsfield. The new 9,000 sq. ft house in its predominant style is reflective of traditional Victorian Villas, which sits among the suburban tranquillity.

The use of a Flemish bond pale red brick with lime mortar, grounds the house into its surroundings. It evokes a sense of craftsmanship, with the subtle detailing which include generously proportioned arches offset with light timber detailing. Copper gutters and exposed rainwater feet add subtle traditional detail against the more contrasting sleek contemporary kitchen “extension” linking the house to the established garden setting and contemporary landscaping scheme.

A striking central sweeping stair links the house both vertically and horizontally which is reinforced by visual links to the garden and upper floor spaces. The use of tall ceilings, oversized sash windows and internal doors help to fill the house with natural light. A simple sequence of cellular cosy rooms is broken up by the central family spaces. The use of bronze pivot doors contrast with the more traditional simple plastered mouldings, herringbone floors and black painted panelled doors which give the house a timeless feel. A true family home equipped for modern living and working with flexibility to open up for entertaining.
