Surrey Manor

Surrey Manor is a Grade II* Listed building dating back to the 17th Century and set within the West Byfleet Green Belt. The house had been substantially extended in the early 20th Century with new wings to either side, both with a different architectural approach to the central building. Inside, the house had a rambling layout that had evolved over time. Generally, the property had been neglected, resulting in years of structural deterioration.

Our client wanted to undertake an ambitious refurbishment, with state-of-the-art building management and security systems, audio visual and lighting controls. The extensive works presented an opportunity to remodel the interior layout to form larger functional reception spaces, including a ballroom and cinema, by merging smaller rooms together. With these changes came significant engineering challenges, such as failing building fabric and site flooding. The distribution of high-volume services through a building not used to such intervention also required careful planning and installation.

A dilapidated 20th Century addition was demolished and replaced with a highly efficient and flexible extension suitable for 21st Century family living, a contemporary pavilion that connects to the landscape with views out to the garden and river. Located on a flood plain, and in an area of archaeological interest, the new extension was raised on stilts, which also meant the structure could be carefully positioned around any historic elements within the ground.

The internal comforts of the main house were achieved through sensitive enhancement of the building fabric. Natural wood fibre insulation and high-quality replacement elements suited to the building’s age and status provided a thermally efficient envelope with reduced air permeability.

We worked alongside an extensive team of consultants for this project, including a landscape architect, interior designer and AV specialist. This involved a high level of coordination across multiple disciplines and resulted in a high-quality building incorporating refined interior design, extensive elegant landscaping and considered architecture.
